J&K Assembly Discusses Fake News and Misinformation

Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Friday witnessed a discussion on the growing issue of fake news and misinformation, with members raising concerns over its impact on governance, public accountability, social harmony, cyber security and democratic functioning.

During the debate, the Speaker expressed displeasure and Expresses Concern to the Deputy Chief Minister over the absence of the Secretary, Information and Director, Information, during the discussion on misinformation and disinformation.


Several members participated in the discussion and stressed the need for stronger checks, accountability and effective measures to curb the spread of false information.

Some MLAs also alleged that fake news is being used by certain individuals to blackmail or extort officers and politicians, and called for strict action against such practices.

The discussion took place after the Appropriation Bill was tabled in the House, with legislators highlighting the serious challenges posed by fake news in today’s digital age and calling for strict action to address the issue.
