February 9, 2026 : BJP MP Tejasvi Surya was detained by police on Monday while protesting at Jayanagar Metro Station, demanding affordable public transport in the city.
Surya, who is also the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), staged the demonstration against the recent Metro fare hike, where ticket prices were increased from Re 1 to Rs 5 depending on distance. The fare hike has now been put on hold.
The MP said the decision to pause the fare increase came after intervention by the Centre. During the protest, Surya carried an empty trunk, saying it symbolised the “empty promises” of the state government.
The protest also followed a remark by Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, who had said Surya was an “empty trunk” active only on social media and not on the ground.
Speaking to reporters, Surya said that instead of improving roads, infrastructure and public facilities, the state government was targeting opposition leaders. He also stated that the government release a white paper on the state’s economic condition.
